Perhaps one of the cleaning tricks that is most commonly overlooked is wiping things down even if they don’t look dirty. Why clean if something doesn’t seem dirty? Are you just wasting your time vacuuming a clean looking carpet, dusting a smooth shelf, or wiping down a shiny sink? Think again! My philosophy is it can always be cleaner, because it can be. One thing that a lot of people tend to forget are the billions of invisible dust particles floating in their homes. Just because you can’t see them, doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Every second these particles are finding objects and surfaces in your home to stick to, and if they aren’t cleaned away regularly, they can start affecting your personal health. And the dust particles aren’t the only culprits! You would be amazed by the amount of dirt, hair, and skin particles that you shed on a daily basis. Yes, it’s a gross thought, but let that be your motivation to wipe things down on a regular basis.
This is the key: if you wipe down a surface once a day, or even better, right after you are done using it, you will find satisfaction in knowing you are leaving the area clean and ready for its next use. I like to have a bottle of surface cleaner or Clorox wipes easily accessible in the rooms with surfaces I use the most, such as the kitchen or bathroom.
It’s hard to notice all the grime building up when you see it accumulate slowly. Don’t wait until your sink gets crusted with toothpaste, hair, and dust. Give it a quick wipe down after you use it—it only takes a few seconds! If you implement this simple task of wiping down surfaces right after you use them, you will notice how much easier it is to do a full house clean.
