Everyday Cleaning: Baking Soda

Everyday cleaning continues with Part 3: Baking soda

For those of you who have sensitive noses, using hydrogen peroxide or vinegar may sound unappealing. Fortunately, there are some general household cleaners that you can use which don’t have a strong odor that comes with it. One of my favorites to use that should already be in your cupboard if you like to bake, is baking soda. Once again, this is one of those awesome and extremely versatile easy at home cleaners.

One of the most popular uses for baking soda (and with god reason) is to remove odors. It’s like a sponge and does an excellent job at sucking the bad odors out of rooms or areas. And the best part is that because it’s a dry powder, it is particularly easy to clean up. So if you have a herd of kids and pets running around your home, this may be the best idea to keep foul odors away because it is so easy to clean up if it gets spilled, unlike vinegar. You can also sprinkle baking soda over urine stains on carpets or furniture and let it sit for 30 minutes, then vacuum up. You should notice a significant improvement in the smell! Some other great places to help keep odors away is to mix some in with your cat litter, sprinkle some at the bottom of your trashcan, and placing a small bowl in the fridge. It also helps tremendously with removing the smell of smoke or cigarettes.

Outside of odor control, baking soda has also become extremely popular for its cleaning uses because it is not a liquid cleaner. It’s much easier to mix a little water into some baking soda to create a paste, then add flour to a liquid cleaner (as suggested with the vinegar). This makes it a popular cleaner for things such as toilets, bathtubs, sinks, and especially grout! The only drawback is that it is not ideal for cleaning a large surface area, as spreading paste on it would be tedious and would probably use up your whole box of baking soda.

These are the two primary ways that I’ve seen baking soda used as a cleaner, but you can also use it to keep drains from getting clogged, cleaning up grease spills, and much more!
